Bulk Buying and Special Offers in Supermarkets Are Best Suited for the Wealthy Who Don’t Need To Save Money
The frustrations of having limited space
My house is relatively small and my kitchen has limited storage. There is only room for a small combined fridge/freezer.
That makes it frustrating to see special offers in supermarkets because I rarely have the space to take advantage of them by buying larger quantities.
“When I leave snacks on view, my children ensure they disappear at twice the normal rate!”
The signs tempt me with larger pack sizes when I only have space for smaller ones. Or they offer three items for the price of two when it’s a struggle to find space for one.
Not only do I miss out on offers, but I also have to go shopping more frequently, which wastes time and fuel.
I sometimes store excess amounts of non-perishables elsewhere in the house. However, if they are displayed in prominent locations, the rate of consumption increases and I wonder if I’m truly making a saving.
When I leave snacks on view, my children ensure they disappear at twice the normal rate! And if they see four bottles of shampoo on top of the bathroom cupboard, maybe they’ll use a more generous amount when washing their hair because they know we have plenty.
Wealthy people don’t need the savings provided by special offers. But when they do take advantage of them, they have the space to store larger quantities. They are also more likely to have large cupboards to store things out of sight, so it looks neater and their children and not tempted.
I wish shops would stop encouraging people to buy more. I find it frustrating to face the choice of feeling like I’m living in a warehouse or losing out.
However, they’re in business to sell as much as they can, so I know it’s unlikely to change.
